Biblical Significance
Fishers of Men. Matthew 4: 18-22
Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee and he saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter and Andrew, casting their fishing nets into the sea. He called them and said, "Follow me and I will make you Fishers of men". He went on and called James and John also - they followed him.
It was probably not the first time that he had seen them, no doubt they had already talked with Jesus and had already listened to him and at this moment there came to them the challenge once and for all to throw in their lot with him.
It was the ordinary people that Jesus chose and fishermen had the right qualities; - patience, perseverance and courage.
The crossed keys in the window above the fishermen are referred to in Matthew 16: 17-19 when Jesus says to Peter, "I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven". This was the promise that Peter would be the means of opening the door to God for thousands upon thousands of people in the days to come.
But it is not only Peter who has the keys of the kingdom, every Christian has.
